Summer in Highlands: Waterfalls, Music & Slow Mornings
A little live music, a little waterfall mist, and plenty of time outside. Make the most of a Highlands summer.

Let summer unfold one day at a time
A summer vacation in Highlands, NC is an invitation to spend more of the day outside without making every outing an expedition. Start with breakfast at the cabin, choose a waterfall or garden walk, and come back with enough afternoon left to relax. When you want a livelier evening, the town’s music calendar offers a lovely reason to head downtown.
For a long weekend, think in three parts: one outdoor day, one town-and-music day, and one flexible day. That last space matters. It lets you respond to the forecast, linger over a lunch, or return to a place you enjoyed rather than constantly moving on.
Make a summer concert the evening plan
The Highlands Outdoor Concert Series lists free Friday and Saturday evening performances during its May–September season. Check the current brochure and calendar for the exact dates, lineup and any changes before building your weekend around a show.
Visit Highlands’ music guide distinguishes Friday Night Live at Town Square from Saturdays on Pine at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park. Pack a lawn chair when appropriate for the event, decide whether to eat beforehand or bring a picnic, and enjoy the evening as the main attraction. Future summer schedules may not yet be published; use the organizer’s current listing when booking ahead.
Choose a waterfall morning
Dry Falls is a natural starting point for a first Highlands waterfall outing. The official Dry Falls listing describes both a viewing platform near the parking area and a route descending by stairs toward the falls. Access to the path behind the water depends on conditions.
Make that one stop worthwhile instead of rushing through a list. Bring water and shoes with grip, keep to marked paths, and leave time for photographs without blocking the trail. If the parking area is full, return later. Our waterfall and hiking weekend itinerary offers ways to combine outings without packing too much into the day.
Trade a busy afternoon for gardens and art
The Highlands Biological Station visitor page is the place to check garden access and programs. As checked in October 2026, the Nature Center building is closed through the end of 2026 while the botanical gardens and surrounding grounds remain open. Check again for your travel dates, particularly if you are planning a future summer visit.
For a change from trails, look at The Bascom’s exhibitions and workshops. Choose a class only after checking its date and registration requirements. Keeping an indoor option in mind makes a rainy afternoon feel like a different kind of holiday rather than a lost day.
Add Cashiers when you have a longer stay
If you have several nights, consider a day in Cashiers. The Cashiers visitor guide introduces The Village Green and the seasonal Groovin’ on The Green concert tradition. Select a current event first, then plan your meal and return drive around it. You do not need to attend concerts in two towns on the same weekend to have a memorable summer trip.
For more variety, our Clayton day-trip guide offers a North Georgia alternative. Keep larger regional drives separate from your Highlands trail days so there is still time to enjoy the place you came to stay.
Save the easiest hours for the cabin
Outdoor dining, a book on your private deck, and a kitchen stocked for an uncomplicated supper can be the best parts of a summer rental. At 65 Below at Netsi Place, two queen bedrooms suit up to four guests, with laundry useful after a day outdoors. The property slopes toward Mirror Lake and has many stairs, so review access before making plans.
Bring layers, comfortable walking shoes and a flexible list. Make restaurant reservations ahead of busy evenings; walk-in availability can be limited. Then find your summer cabin dates and leave at least one morning completely unplanned.
