Around the mountains
Beyond Highlands: Mountain Towns Worth a Little Wandering
Choose a direction, find a new favorite place, and keep enough of the day for the journey home.

A good base does not require a new address every night
One pleasure of a Highlands cabin vacation is getting to know your home base while exploring a little farther when the mood strikes. You can enjoy familiar mornings in the Mirror Lake area, then choose a neighboring town for lunch, a park visit or a seasonal event. The aim is variety without spending the whole holiday unpacking and repacking.
Use this guide to choose the scale of outing you want. Cashiers, Franklin, Dillard and Scaly Mountain are regional options to compare first. Clayton adds a North Georgia town day. Asheville and Dahlonega are more substantial excursions and deserve a full day each. Always check live driving directions and conditions rather than relying on a fixed travel-time promise.
Cashiers: gardens, a village day and seasonal gatherings
Cashiers is a good choice when you want an outing that can mix a meal with a relaxed wander. The Village Green gives the visit a natural focal point; check its current events if a concert or community celebration interests you.
Jackson County’s visitor guide highlights the summer Groovin’ on The Green series and the autumn Cashiers Valley Leaf Festival. Verify the schedule for your year and dates. If you also want to walk at Whiteside Mountain, decide how much of the day to give the trail, and let the town visit remain pleasantly simple.
Franklin: another Main Street and a different direction
Franklin is worth considering when you want a town-centered outing west of Highlands. Begin with the Town of Franklin’s official website for current community information and links to its events. Pick a particular shop, museum or event only after checking that destination’s opening details.
A Franklin day can pair naturally with researching the Cullasaja Gorge route, but scenic stops need suitable parking and time. Do not pull over simply because another car has stopped. If you want waterfall ideas along the wider Highlands–Franklin direction, compare the options in our waterfall guide before leaving.
Dillard and Scaly Mountain: choose the outing before the drive
Look toward Dillard and Scaly Mountain when a North Carolina–North Georgia excursion appeals. Explore Dillard’s natural-attractions guide is a useful starting point for the surrounding landscapes. Check current operator information for any seasonal activity you want to add.
This direction can be about the journey as much as a town center. Choose a scenic stop and a meal, or one specific outdoor activity, rather than expecting every community to have the same kind of downtown experience as Highlands. Check weather and road conditions, especially for winter travel.
Clayton: give Rabun County a proper look
For a fuller North Georgia outing, choose Clayton and the surrounding Rabun County area. Our Clayton day-trip article separates a town-focused visit from Black Rock Mountain and Tallulah Gorge plans. Those are options to choose among, not a requirement to see everything at once.
Use Explore Rabun to confirm businesses and events, and reserve a special meal where possible. The best day trip has something you are excited to reach and enough time left to enjoy being there.
Asheville and Dahlonega: the longer adventures
Choose Asheville for a focused Biltmore or arts outing. Choose Dahlonega for gold-rush history, the historic square or a Christmas-season visit. Neither belongs on the same afternoon’s checklist as several nearby towns.
If your Highlands stay is only a weekend, consider staying local. A longer visit gives you room for one major excursion and a quieter recovery day. Leave extra time around timed tickets, restaurant reservations and the return drive after an evening celebration.
Keep a little time for the place you are staying
The point of a cabin vacation is not only what you can reach from it. Make room for a meal outside, a book and a morning without a departure time. At 65 Below at Netsi Place, up to four guests share two queen bedrooms, a full kitchen, laundry and private outdoor areas.
The rental is part of our hillside cabin in the Mirror Lake area, with many stairs and one dedicated parking space with EV charging available. Read the access details before booking. Then choose your dates and plan a few good outings around the quiet time you came for.
