Slow weekends
A Romantic Highlands Weekend, Without the Rush
A lovely dinner, a little mountain air, and a morning with nowhere urgent to be. Make a weekend feel like your own.

Start with the way you want to feel
A romantic Highlands, NC weekend does not need a complicated schedule. It needs a little space for the two of you: a meal you look forward to, a walk at your own pace, and time together without an itinerary constantly asking you to leave. The mountains provide the setting; you decide how much to fill it.
Choose one experience each that would make the trip feel special. Perhaps one of you wants a scenic walk and the other wants a long lunch or a spa appointment. Put those in the plan first, then protect the quiet hours around them. A getaway should feel different from a busy week at home.
Make dinner a reservation, not a last-minute search
Use our ten Highlands restaurant picks to choose the evening’s style: a special dinner, something casual or an early meal before a performance. Reserve ahead wherever the restaurant accepts bookings and ask about current walk-in policies. In a small town, the place you most want may not have spare tables when you arrive.
If you are celebrating an anniversary or another occasion, mention it directly to the restaurant while booking and ask about any arrangements you want. Do not assume a special menu, flowers or a particular table will be available. Clear plans let you relax once the evening begins.
Consider a spa afternoon at Old Edwards Inn
The Spa at Old Edwards offers a restorative change of pace in Highlands. The hospitality group’s visitor FAQ explains public access for scheduled treatments and recommends reserving early. Confirm availability, the services you want and the facilities included with your appointment directly with the spa.
A stay at Netsi Place does not include Old Edwards resort amenities or membership privileges. Book the experience independently and arrange the rest of the day around the appointment. If the desired time is unavailable, a leisurely lunch and a quieter afternoon can be just as welcome.
Choose a view you can enjoy together
For an outdoor interlude, consult the Highlands overlooks guide and pick a walk or viewpoint suited to both travelers. A shorter outing you enjoy together is a better choice than a demanding hike selected only for the photograph at the top.
Check daylight and the forecast, wear comfortable shoes and leave time to return before the evening’s reservation. If a waterfall sounds more appealing, our waterfall weekend guide helps you choose a manageable plan. You can always save a bigger hike for another visit.
Let the season add its own character
Summer lends itself to a meal outside and a current local music event. Fall brings foliage drives and a reason to pack layers. Christmas and the holidays can add festive town gatherings, while a quieter winter visit may be perfect for travelers who enjoy a slower pace and confirm business hours in advance.
Use the Highlands calendar to see what falls on your dates. If a celebration catches your eye, make it an option rather than an obligation. A romantic weekend should have enough flexibility to follow your mood.
Make a cabin morning part of the occasion
At 65 Below at Netsi Place, a full kitchen makes breakfast at home easy, and private outdoor dining and deck areas give you space to linger when weather permits. Two queen bedrooms accommodate up to four guests, so the rental can also suit two couples who want a shared mountain weekend.
Our rental is within our own cabin in Highlands’ Mirror Lake area. There are many stairs across the hillside, including toward the private lake deck, and one dedicated parking space with EV charging available. Read the access information together before booking so the stay fits your plans.
Check available cabin dates, arrange the one or two experiences that matter most, and leave a morning with no timetable. Often that is the part of the weekend you remember longest.
